Fall Color

102109fallcolors

Fall colors came quickly this year with leaves reaching their peak and then plummeting to the ground from a combination of rain and wind. With a forecast of two day sof 70 degree plus temperatures expected today, some colors will still be on display on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The fog of fall

101609fog2Cold, wet weather accompanied by fog moved into Southwestern Virginia this week, giving us scenes like a fog-shrouded U.S. 221 north of Floyd (above) or the Blue Ridge Parkway near Rocky Knob (right).

The moisture is expected to stick around through Saturday and might even bring fog to Friday’s home football game at Floyd County High School.

Some areas of the region may get snow before the weekend is over.

That’s right. Snow.

And winter is officially still two months away.

Long runners, long shadows

High school cross-country runners cast a long shadow Wednesday during a meet at Auburn High School in Riner. Floyd County took first and second in the varsity event. Full photos and stories in next week’s Floyd Press.

Moonset

Early Sunday morning brought a brilliant setting moon over Sandy Flats Road in Floyd County.

Autumn moon

Yes, that was a beautiful moon hanging over Floyd County Thursday night. I lit up the sky over a football game at the high school and provided good viewing as I headed home following the game.
