Dual assignments for shooting Floyd’s 14-13 come from behind victory over Lebanon in the state semi-final football tournament. Since Lebanon is down in the far western corner of the state, the Bristol Herald-Courier, a sister publication to The Floyd Press in the Media General chain, asked for photos.
It’s been a while since I shot on a daily newspaper deadline and darkness fell on the studio as I readied six prints to transmit to the chief photographer in Bristol. They used one in the web story (left) of Luke Harris getting tackled but I haven’t seen the print edition yet.
The Roanoke Times coverage includes several excellent photos from Justin Cook.
Floyd will meet Gretna in the state final at 4:15 p.m. Saturday in Salem Stadium.

While trying to beat this latest bout with pneumonia, I haven’t had as much time as I’d like for photography. So I put together this Flash show of some of my favorite photos. Please enjoy.

Yep, that’s a bit of snow on the ground this morning. Over in West Virginia, they have six inches or more but what fell here overnight was just enough to make the ground seem almost white.
The thermometer read 21 when I got up at 5:00 a.m. today and might reach 31 at the height of the day so the wet conditions will bring black ice on back roads and slick conditions on bridges.
Snowfalls are rare these days. Not like the 50s and 60s when snow fell from October to February (and sometimes March) and today’s forecasts calls for light snow showers with all precipitations ending by 6 p.m.
Overnight lows will remain below freezing throughout the week but highs are expected to reach 46 degrees on Thursday and the low 40s for the weekend.
A reader the other day asked what the Friday Night Jamboree was like in the days before the Floyd County Store was remodeled. Since I’m working on an updated documentary and photo show of the "new" Jamboree, I thought I’d revisit the "old." Here’s a look at the Jamboree from earlier times. (Flash animation. Requires Adobe Flash Player plug-in).
